(17th century) The Carignano Palace, one of the most original baroque constructions, is marked by the curving facade in terracotta and the atrium with the double staircases: Guarino Guarini, its designer in 1679, was inspired by the drawings by Bernini for the Louvre. In the 19th century, a second block was added for housing the Italian Parliament, with a new frontage facing the current Piazza Carlo Alberto.
The Carignano Palace is a symbolic place for the history of the House of Savoy and the Italian Risorgimento: as well as being the birthplace of Charles Albert and Victor Emmanuel II, it was the site for the Piedmontese Parliament and the first Parliament of Italy.
Since 1878, the rooms on the piano nobile have accommodated the National Museum of the Risorgimento.
