Situated at a fork in the ancient road Via Francigena (to France), this spot was a popular resting point for pilgrims headed to Campostella. The current building was erected in the fifteenth century, perhaps in two stages. The exposed trusses of the presbytery were originally covered by a panelled ceiling.
In the Presbytery on the west wall, recent restorations have brought to light a fragment of coat of arms attributed to nobility of the Provana family, feudal lords of Pianezza. It is recorded that this family commissioned the fresco decoration of the church. The north wall depicts the history of the nativity and infancy of the Holy Virgin. The south wall is decorated with evangelic scenes. The vaults of the arches contain eight scenes of the Dormitio Virgins and the last events of the life of the Madonna. The authors are anonymous and of a school of technique that is no longer completely gothic.
