The memory of the ancient church of Saint Paul, on which it was founded, is preserved in the number and the order of the altars. Each altar was entrusted to a particular group or to the patronage of a local family. These groups competed in the embellishments and the decorations of these altars, which have resulted in a sumptuousness of décor that may still be observed today.
