A fortress dating back to medieval times, it was reconstructed in its current baroque form by the counts Solaro, to whom are due the statues decorating the facade which came from the Palace of Venaria, and the 18th century Chinese wallpaper decorating many of the rooms.
Acquired by the Savoy family at the end of the 18th century, it was selected by Charles Felix as his summer residence: the king had the interiors redecorated with spectacular frescos and glorious trompe-l’oeil, like those based on mythology that decorate the reception room of honour.
The Castle of Govone is also famous for its 18th century Italianate garden where a wide variety of roses can be found and a rare example of wild tulip.
