Originally a Carthusian monastery, it was acquired by the Savoy and transformed into a castle and hunting lodge by Charles Albert: the project managed to brilliantly combine the simplicity of a former convent with the monumental style fitting any residence of the Savoy.
Despite this, the building was never used for royal duties but purely for private enjoyment: here Victor Emmanuel II, the king hunter, organised impressive hunting expeditions and princess Marie Clotilde spent the summer. Even today, fragments of Court life can be seen in the bedrooms that retain their original furniture, as well as in the king’s kitchens.
